Scarecrow Mark Making
This week on the mark making table we are colouring and tracing the patterns on the scarecrow. Miss Taylor and I are looking to see how each child holds their pencil. The majority of the children appear to show a preference for their right hand, some haven’t full made up their mind yet and a couple show a preference for their right hand.
There are four different types of pencil hold, starting with whole hand grasp.
The last picture showing the pencil between thumb and index finger is the hold we are aiming for.
One way we encourage a correct pencil grip is by placing a pencil on the table in front of the child with the point facing them. We then ask the child to use their thumb and index finger to pinch the pencil near the tip and let it flop back into the soft squidgy skin in the crook of their hand between their thumb and index finger.
